Julia McIntosh

After graduating with a Bachelor's degree in Literature and Writing with an emphasis in Writing from California State University at San Marcos, I obtained a California Single Subject Teaching Credential in English and English Language Development.  Immediately after receiving my teaching credential, I joined the Vista Unified School District at Rancho Buena Vista High School as an English 9 and English 11 teacher.  After a couple of years of teaching those assignments, I began to teach in the ELD department, teaching SEI (Sheltered English Instruction) 11 and SEI 12.  When VUSD revised their ELD structure, I took on the task of teaching ELD 3 and ELD 4.

Always up for an adventure, I left Rancho Buena Vista High School after teaching for 5 years and accepted a job in Alaska.  I taught in a VERY remote Eskimo village about 70 miles south of Nome.  At a K-12 school, I taught all levels of high school English and added Journalism and Drama to my resume.  I left Alaska after one school year and accepted a job in Heber City, Utah at Wasatch Mountain Junior High School.  There, I taught English 8 and English 9 as well as a Reading class.
Though I absolutely loved living in Utah, I returned to San Diego county and was placed again at Rancho Buena Vista HS as an ELD teacher, and I eventually became the ELD Department Chair.  For 5 years, I ran the ELD Department, teaching ELD 1s, 3s, 4s, and the occasional SEI course.  For my last 3 years at Rancho, I stepped out of the classroom and became an instructional coach for the site.  In this role, I was able to work closely with administration and teachers and had the unique opportunity to observe the best teaching practices in VUSD.  I also returned to university to obtain my Master's degree in Literacy.
I joined Mission Vista High School in the fall of 2012.  Now, in my 19th year of teaching, I will be teaching English 10 Honors, Academic Language and Literacy, and AP Language (11th grade).
In my private life, I have a small farm located in Valley Center, California.  I am owned by several horses, goats, dogs, cats, and 1 desert tortoise.  I have three boys - ages 22, 5, and 4.  I also have 2 granddaughters.  So, yes, I am a very busy woman all day, every day.
