English 10 Course Overview:

English 10 is a course that emphasizes the improvement of reading, writing, speaking, listening, and discussion skills. Students will read, analyze, and respond to literature written by English and European authors.  My goal is not only to prepare students for the state exams and graduation, but also to prepare students for life beyond high school, be it college, career, or vocational study.  Students will explore a variety of texts and learn and practice several reading and thinking strategies to help them improve their reading and writing skills.  Students should come to class prepared to express insights and ideas both verbally and non-verbally through formal and informal writing assignments, partner and group work, individual creative projects, discussions and homework assignments.

English 12 ERWC Course Overview:
The Expository Reading and Writing Course (ERWC), is a full-year college preparatory English course for high school seniors taken in place of the traditional British Literature, Advanced Placement, or International Baccalaureate courses. The ERWC aligns with the Common Core State Standards, and addresses critical reading and writing problems identified by the CSU English Placement Test Committee, and prepares students to meet the expectations of college and university faculty. Course assignments, organized into 14 modules and based largely on non-fiction texts, emphasize the in-depth study of expository, analytical, and argumentative reading and writing. As a class this year, we must complete 10 of the modules; this means the workload will be heavy and the pace will be quick. Over 50% of the incoming freshmen in the CSU system alone are currently required to take remedial English courses due to the lack of proper preparation for university level reading and writing.  The goal of the ERWC is to effectively prepare students for the rigorous levels of both reading and writing that will be expected of them while attending college.
